How to adopt a pet from PUP.

If you are thinking about adopting an animal from PUP the please have a look at our Facebook page (Prevent Unwanted Pets Wigan Branch). If you have not seen anything on this site or on our Facebook page don’t be deterred. Please inbox us on Facebook and discuss your requirements with our team, we have many animals waiting to come into care or we may know of an animal waiting for a good home at another rescue organisation.

Any animal up for adoption from PUP will be vet checked before they are released for rehoming. This means that they will flea treated and wormed and if it is appropriate they will also be vaccinated. If the animal is old enough it will be neutered. If the animal is not old enough for neutering, assurances will be sought that this will be done as soon as the animal is old enough. PUP can provide assistance with this if required. We WILL check that neutering has been carried out. Please read the section on neutering on this site for more information.

Before any animal is released to their new home, that home must undergo a home check. This is not checking up on you or the state of your home, but is designed to assess the suitability of the home offered and to match the individual / family to the right animal. For example we will not home a large, youthful, energetic dog with an elderly couple or a family with very small children as the dog could quite easily knock someone over.

We do need to check the whole family is serious about the commitment needed to adopt an animal. We need to be sure the home environment is safe inside and outside for the animal and we will discuss the likely problems a new pet may bring.

Once the home check has been successful and a suitable animal chosen we will advise you on what equipment, food, etc. you will need to purchase before you new pet arrives. We will also need to complete the inevitable paper work before arrangements are made for your new pet to move into their new home.

We will provide you with 4 weeks free PetPlan insurance with all our dogs, cats and rabbits. If an annual policy is taken out with PetPlan before the end of the 4 week period PUP will receive commission from that policy every year. Please read the section on insuring your animal.

We can also have your animal micro-chipped for a minimal cost of £12.50. Please read the section on micro-chipping for more information.
